JOHN M.
Teacher on Wheels
I'm John McGarvey, a seasoned educator with a rich history of classroom leadership. For a significant portion of my career, I had the privilege of being the Head Teacher for Grade 5 at Al Najah Private School in Abu Dhabi. In this capacity, I not only managed seven classrooms but also took charge of teaching my own class. This pivotal role allowed me to gain invaluable insights into curriculum implementation and educational leadership. Over the years, I've honed my skills in teaching Math, Science, and Moral Education, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for my students. My responsibilities extended beyond the classroom, as I mentored new class teachers in crafting effective IEPs and assessments aligned with the British Curriculum. This experience not only deepened my understanding of curriculum development but also reinforced my commitment to providing a supportive and enriching educational environment. Beyond my role in Abu Dhabi, I've had the privilege of teaching in a range of educational settings. From St. Finian’s National School in Dublin, Ireland, where I taught a variety of subjects to Grades 3 and 4, to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Vancouver, Canada, where I led the Math curriculum for Grade 5 students, my diverse experiences have equipped me with a unique perspective on education. These experiences, coupled with my new role as Head of Physical and Health Education at Saint Patrick Elementary School, have provided me with a holistic understanding of educational practices. I'm enthusiastic about leveraging this wealth of experience to shape meaningful learning experiences for students, fostering a lifelong love for education.

Briar H.
Tutor on Wheels
Hi, my name is Briar, I'm a 22-year-old Chemical Engineering undergraduate student at UBC. I have experience tutoring high school level Math and Science, including Chemistry and Physics. I like to take a very adaptive approach towards teaching, as I think it's very important to acknowledge that most people learn in different ways. I like to get to know students and, with their help, figure out what is the best way for them to learn. As I myself am a very visual learner, I like to incorporate lots of drawings and diagrams to help explain topics, to a greater extent than paragraph upon paragraph of words. I also have experience working with students who may be neurodivergent or have any other barrier that makes school challenging, as I myself am as well!
